http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-13601917
Summary:
The parents of children at King's Park Secondary School in Glasgow have been advised that their children must wear schooluniforms and not short skirts and tight trousers. The school fears for paedophiles so it made new guidelines on dress codes. The reason the school did this was because of a recent arrest of a local paedophile. The school wrote a letter to the parents which said: "We believe that an appropriate school uniform protects children from being targeted by sexual predators". There was evidence in the south of Glasgow about adults who were photographing school girls in short skirts and also school boys and girls who wore tight trousers. Parents are advised to buy school uniforms at Marks and Spencer.
Opinion:
I think it is good the school made these measures about school uniforms. This way children are more protected against paedophiles. It is really sick that paedophiles walk around the school and are making pictures of the children. Although I find the idea of school uniforms to protect children against paedophiles good it is also ridiculous that children cannot wear what they want only because there are peadophiles. I think school uniforms could block their development of identity.

Patient abuse caught on film labeled 'torture'
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13548222
Summary:
Winterbourne View, a residential hospital in Bristol, seems to abuse their patients as well verbally as physically. Secret filming have shown this. After seeing the tape police arrested four people who are staff of Winterbourne View.
Winterbourne View treats people who have learning problems and autism. Andrew McDonnell, who works with adults with mental problems, labeled the examples which were shown on tape as "torture". Castlebeck, the owner of the hospital, apologized for the images of the tape and suspended 13 employees. According to the tape it seemed that patients were pinned down, kicked and slapped and were dragged into showers while they had their clothes on. Mr. McDonnell said: "I was very shocked by some of the treatment of vulnerable patients. This is a therapeutic environment. Where is the therapy in any of this? I would argue this is torture".
Opinion:
I totally agree with Mr. McDonnell's argument that this news item is shocking and that you cannot call this therapy, because where is the therapy? I also would argue this as torture. The patients in this kind of hospitals are already very vulnerable and this behavior of staff would definitely make them even more vulnerable and their problems will not go away in any case. These patients also have family and those family did not even know how they were treated before the tape showed up. So next to the patients it is also really sad for their family members by seeing the secret tape. The suspected staff members have been suspended, but I would fire them and hopefully the police will come up with a punishment, because this staff member's behavior is definitely not tolerable.

New home sought for dog after stabbing
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-13575743
Summary:
RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) in Leicester were shocked when they saw a dog which was badly attacked. They said: 'It was the worst case of animal cruelty they had ever seen'. The dog, named Bonnie, is a border collie and was stabbed 13 times. The stabbers left her while she was almost dying. Lisa Smith from Woodside Animal Centre said: "It absolutely sickened me when I saw her. How anybody could do this to an animal is just beyond me". The five-year-old is recovering well at the moment, also by surgery. The people who helped the dog said that the scars have healed and are not infected. Also with the dog things are going better. She is not as scared for people anymore as she was before. She also wants to play, which is a good sign. So far no-one had been charged. RSPCA is investigating who cause the dog's injuries.
Opinion:
I think it is so sad to hear what had happened to the dog. I love animals and especially dogs. It is hard to imagine that people could abuse a dog, an animal which is so dependent of people. I have a dog myself and it would drive me crazy if someone would hurt her. I can understand the anxiety of the dog towards people, but fortunately she starts to trust people again. I really hope they find the person(s) who injured this dog and that they will be punished for it.

RE Teacher Gary Smith's Muslim attackers jailed
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-13566526
Summary:
Gary Smith, a 38 year old religion teacher from the Central Foundation Girls' School in London was beaten. The attackers, four Muslim men, left him while Gary was unconscious. The four Muslim men attacked Gary with a metal rod and a brick. The reason why these men attacked Gary was because he teached Muslim girls about all kind of religions (and the teacher was not a Muslim himself). Two of the Muslim men, Azad Hussain and Akmol Hussain were given the sentence of a minimum of five years in prison. The other two men deserved a longer prison punishment. Simon Alam has given ten years and Sheikh Rashid was sentenced for eight years. Their judge, John Hand, said he believed that the four men could cause a real danger for society because of their extreme believe towards the Islam. Luckily the teacher survived the attack, but he had multiple injuries. One of the attackers said 'he did it in the name of Allah, so he did not mind going to prison'.
Opinion:
In my opinion it is ridiculous what Gary Smith had to overcome. He only did his job. Also the reaction of the four Muslim men is unacceptable and I am glad to hear they were sent to prison for a couple of years. The man who claimed he did it in the name of Allah is really mad in his head, so it is better to sent him also to a psychologist (next to prison). I am glad to hear the teacher survived the attack and for what I have read he is also teaching again. He also could have become scared to teach ever again, but fortunately this was not the case.

Causewayend Primary School fire started deliberately
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-13491137
Summary:
According to the police a fire at a primary school in Aberdeen was started on purpose. The fire happened last Friday in the afternoon and caused a lot of damages to the building. Firemen had to close the surrounding streets to bring the fire under control. According to a policeman of Grampian police there was a report about youth gatherings in the area. People are looking for evidence to what caused the fire, but a policeman of Grampian police thinks someone caused the fire on purpose to damage the school building. Parents are asked to watch their children so that they know where their kids are and what they are up to. Parents also need to tell their children about the dangers fire can cause and that fire is not something to play with.
Luckily there were no injured people caused by the fire, but that definitely could have happened.
Opinion:
It is sad to hear about this fire, especially the fact that the police thinks someone deliberately started the fire. It is also on a primary school, which makes this news item even sadder. It is hard to imagine that someone caused the fired on purpose and that there is a possibility some kids have caused the fire. Parents need to be aware of such kind behavior. Luckily there were no injured, but still it is the responsibility of the parents what their children are doing and how they must prevent these happenings, for example by talking with their children to make them be aware of the consequences for their behavior.

Taxi driver ordered to remove 'phallic' cross
Metro newspaper *13-05-2011* metro.co.uk
Summary:
A Taxi driver had to remove a cross from his dashboard because according to some people it looked 'phallic'. This opinion about the cross came from a 15-year-old boy who told teachers about the blue glass cross. The taxi driver was not aware of this problem at all until council bosses emailed his taxi company because of a complaint of the boy's school. The taxi driver removed the cross after receiving the complaint because he did not want his taxi company to lose the contract with the council and he was worried he would lose his job. Although removing the cross, the taxi driver was very angry about it. He already had the cross for 18 months is his car and he regularly goes to church. There were not any problems before about the cross. According to the news article he said: "being known for picking up teenagers with a phallic symbol in his car reflected badly on him". The taxi company however said that there was nothing wrong with the cross.
Opinion:
I think it is ridiculous and exaggerated. I saw a picture of the cross in the newspaper and it did not look phallic at all. Also the man was not aware of any problems the cross could cause and the boy could have ask the taxi driver why he had that cross in his cab. That way the taxi driver could have explained it was based on religious ground and did not mean any harm with the cross. Despite of finding the reaction of the boy exaggerated, I do think it is good the taxi driver removed the cross after the complaint. That way the taxi driver prevents problems between his taxi company and the councils and with the school of the boy.

Exam fears drive students to drink
Metro newspaper *13-05-2011* metro.co.uk
Summary:
Stress for exams in combination with pressure of parents are driving many schoolchildren to alcohol abuse and self-harm, according to a new study. One in ten pupils will scar or hit themselves when the exams are drawing near, according to the ChildLine counseling service. 14 per cent of the schoolchildren admit that they grab the bottle because they struggle to cope with the exam stress and they are definitely not helped by the high expectations of their parents. Also 4 per cent of the children confess that they use drugs so that they can deal with their anxiety. Two-thirds of the schoolchildren do not get enough sleep and they are very afraid of missing out on University. Both parents and their children are worried about how they will manage during the exams and how to manage if they do not get the grades. ChildLine advises parents not to pressure their children and to leave them alone when it comes to household chores.
Opinion:
I can understand the worries schoolchildren can have when exams are drawing near and during the exams. It surprise me that a lot of schoolchildren are driven by alcohol abuse and drugs abuse and that they want to hurt themselves. That is a really big problem that should definitely be solved. I also think parents have a high role in all this. When parents give high expectations to their children the child could only get more nervous and this nervousness could lead to failing the exam. Parents should encourage their children in a could way for example by saying that it does not matter when they fail their exam when they did all the best they can. When a child did the best it can do, it could not have done it better than that. Both parents and their children have to appreciate that. Parents have to watch their children during the exams period so that they will not do stupid things like drugs abuse and they should form a listening ear for their children when they have these big fears for their exams. I also agree with ChildLine that parents should leave their children alone when it comes to household chores so that they can completely focus on their exams.
